Kazuo Kodama, a Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, issued a statement on Friday that expressed regret for Muslims' feelings that were hurt by images deemed inappropriate in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime. The original manga's Part 3 ("Stardust Crusaders," pictured at right) has a scene in which the main villain, Dio, vowed to kill the main character Jōtarō Kujō while looking at illegible book pages. The staff of the anime version unknowingly inserted reproductions of pages from the Qur'an, the main religious text of Islam, in the corresponding scene of the sixth anime episode ("The Mist of Vengeance").

Hiroyuki Takei And Stan Lee Presents Ultimo
April 19th, 2008 by Neil | 5 comments
Viz Media has announced a joint venture with comics legend Stan Lee. Along with one of Japan's biggest artists, Hiroyuki Takei, Stan has created his first magna title. This new title, featuring the hero known as Ultimo, was just published today in Japan.
The Editor-in-Chief of Viz Media's Shonen Jump magna magazine, Mark Weidenbaum, lead the press conference today at the NYCC. On the panel were Ultimo's creators, Stan Lee and Hiroyuki Takei, along with a translator.
One obsticle to the crafting of this comic book was the fact that Stan does not speak Japanese and Hiroyuki does not speak English. Stan sent his story idea to Hiroyuki who re-worked it to fit into Japanese story telling style and then sent it back to Stan who made further changes. This back and forth continued several times until Ultimo was ready to be unveiled to the world. This title then represents an amalgamation of American and Japanese styles, hopefully representing the best of both and offering great appeal to all audiences. Hiroyuki explained the principle difference being that Ultimo has a more narrative style than traditional magna, a medium he has risen far in.

Amazon To Start Selling Doujinshi
June 23rd, 2006 by El Wiseguy | 12 comments
A few days after the American Amazon site began offering groceries, Amazon JP has started offering a consignment sales service. Called the 'e-Taku Sales Service' (e-Taku being a combination of the word 'itaku (consignment)' and the 'e-' prefix, favored by businesses around the globe in the heydays of the dot-com boom of the late 90's), it would allow individuals to consign products they own the rights to to Amazon, and in exchange for an annual membership fee of 9000 yen ($78.50 USD) and 40% of the price of the item (37% for games and software), Amazon would sell the item just like any other product, and offer 24/7 shipping.
Amazon is also planning on exploring options regarding self-published works which do not have ISBN or JAN codes (which currently cannot be sold on Amazon Marketplace), meaning that in the near future, it may be possible to buy doujinshi and original (non-commercial, fan-created) games on Amazon. Also, some people have speculated that this is a first step towards turning Amazon Marketplace into a consignment seller. If this does happen, it would no longer be necessary to pay shipping fees to individual sellers for each book, and books could be mass-ordered at once for free shipping.

Kids Who Can't Read Mangas
June 23rd, 2006 by El Wiseguy | 19 comments
Livedoor News has an article commenting on a recent phenomenon in Japan, and perhaps a true testament to the era of information overload we live in: kids who don't know how to read manga.
It would still be understandable if you were trying to read complex literature, and told me "I don't really get it." But what do you mean, "manga is too difficult to understand"!?
Apparently, we are seeing kids nowadays who do not understand the basic concepts for reading manga, like 'speech bubbles' and 'panels.' Not understanding how panel works, OK I guess you can't help it if you're a young child who's never touched manga before, but speech bubbles? That's the absolute essence of manga! Just why are we seeing this sort of phenomenon?
