Why is that off? Sesshomaru is very intelligent. Vash is extremely intelligent too. You are lead to believe otherwise and since you cannot see past the surface that is all you will know.

Yangashi from Death note and L. Queen relina and Heero from Gumndam wing.
Though, Naruto can be smart. Who would think of using a shadow clone to assist with rasengan. As well as the battle against Zakubo. His plan helped free Kakashi from that water trap.
Kakashi is the smartest though. Shikamaru is smart, but not in a upfront battle. Intelligence or street smarts is what I'm getting at.

Knives and Vash from Trigun, Sesshomaru from Inuyasha, and Shikamaru and Kakashi from Naruto are all really smart.

I find there's a big difference between who I think/like as the smartest anime character and who actually IS the smartest. I certainly agree that the likes of Vash the Stampede and Knives are quite brilliant. But I think judging by all I have seen and all she has been capable of, Washuu from tenchi is the most brilliant, genius, and smartest anime character I have ever seen.
However, I also think one of the biggest brains of the anime world is Sunabouzu (better known to all as his show's title) Desert Punk. Punk is a maniacal, strategical genius, who despite showing varying levels of disgusting depravity and sexist treatment of women, is in fact an extremely smart person who knows how to think on his feet and creates some of the most amazing plans in the heat of battle.
