...and probably Sony's PSP as well.

Microsoft has confirmed the development of a range of portable entertainment devices similar to Apple's iPod, finally putting an end to at least one aspect of the recent rumour and speculation.

With little more than the official confirmation of its development and a teaser website (http://comingzune.com/default.aspx?ref=23159&id=2631) introducing the Zune brand, Microsoft is still not giving much away in terms of the functionality of its new devices - specifically with regards to gaming.

Rumours of Microsoft's intention to take on Apple - and the possibility of expanding the device to also play games - took on renewed vigour at the start of the month, with numerous reports of a device being developed under the guidance of Xbox evangelist J Allard and hitting the stores before Christmas.

The rumours appear to be at least partially correct, with the Redmond giant's GM of marketing, Chris Stephenson, issuing an official statement which reads: "Today we confirmed a new music and entertainment project called Zune. Under the Zune brand, we will deliver a family of hardware and software products, the first of which will be available this year.

"We see a great opportunity to bring together technology and community to allow consumers to explore and discover music together," Stephenson added. The company has so far remained tight lipped on anything beyond music, leaving the industry to speculate once more on the company's portable gaming plans.

The first in Zune's product range is set to go on sale later this year. Further information on its functionality and pricing, together with details of the software service used to source and purchase music, are expected to be announced shortly.

As long as it doesn't crash every 5 mins it should be ok.

Leaked photos looks like it's a pretty near replica of iPod's design (with the whole wheel thing). Which asks the question, how the deuce are you supposed to play games on it (that's gonna make the PSP run to its PS2 and weep) ...?

If it's gonna be another "N-Cage"-like system, all I say is they can bend over and shove it up their arses for all I care.

I'll stick with my CD player and PSP, thank you very much. Got an ipod Shuffle and the thing never worked for me ( currently trying to exchange it, but ah well. )

And I'm sorry, but wtf was up with that teaser? It shouldn't even be called a teaser. =__= As far as I know, a fat dude, a cute bunny, and a little action-figure-sized man petting it, has nothing to do with Zune's whole thing. Whatever that whole thing is anyway...

But, I guess we just have to see. :/ People will, afterall, buy things just for its looks instead of really looking into it.

Gah. The "N-Gage" was a disaster. I remember when it came out. It was supposed to be awesome. A phone you could play real video games on... then it turned out to be a small, bad NES emulator that you can't the game out without first taking the battery pack out.

Yess, it was annoying... >__o I seriously advise Apple to stick with their music thing and for Gawds sake not to crossover to the video game thing. But, then again, maybe it will be a hit. *shrugs*

The "leaked photo" as people described, floating around the web:

MS might just pull this one off if they do it right.

Marketed as an MP3 player as the main target, with gaming functions as a secondary feature. Rumours has it their games are going to be streamed off Xbox Live Arcade (which is proving popular amongst the X360 crowd [how ironic]), and stored on the Zune whatever's HD. It's also possible for it to be the "DS for the Wii" as is the "PSP for the PS3". Makes sense when MS has been hyping their Xbox Live Anywhere pretty heavily after E3.
